Andrew J. McDonald

d. February 16, 2018

1941 ~ 2018
Andrew J. McDonald was born July 15, 1941 in Moab, Utah to John and Lillian McDonald, to whom he felt greatly indebted for his heritage. He passed away February 12, 2018 of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. His growing up years were in the spare reaches of southeastern Oregon, Lakeview and John Day. He served an LDS mission to Central America in 1961 - 64, which he often said was a pivotal moment in his life. He readily admitted that marrying Patricia Sue Dame, who was the cornerstone of their marriage for over 50 years, was his greatest achievement. His military service was with 8th Special Forces Airborne in the Army's Southern Command headquartered in Panama, back in the day of the Canal Zone. He received a Ph.D. in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas in Austin and often reflected fondly on the Austin years. He was naturally smart and accepting and marveled at life. He loved to read, think and write, often on his research in Mesoamerica.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Sue Dame of Ivins, Utah, his children Aaron McDonald (Jae) of Eugene, Oregon, Daniel McDonald (Karina) of Orem, Utah, Nathan McDonald (Katie) of Scottsdale Arizona, Andrea Elieson (Marc) of Temple Texas, and Matthew McDonald (Karen) of Katy Texas, his sisters Paula Walker (Robert) of Lopez Island Washington, Jean Atwood (Steven) of Ivins, Utah, and 14 grandchildren, all of whom have been his truest friends.
Funeral services will be held at the LDS Ivins 10th ward chapel at 25 Center street, Ivins, Utah. February 23, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. There will be a viewing Thursday evening from 6:00pm to 8:00 p.m. at the same building. Viewing on Friday prior to funeral from 9:30am to 10:40 a.m. In lieu of flowers please give to the American Cancer Society.
