Eldean Roy Engle, affectionately known as “Roy” to family and friends, was born on May 25, 1953, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He valiantly battled cancer for several years before ultimately losing the war for his life on May 22, 2024, in Salt Lake City, Utah. His family gratefully acknowledges the kind and skillful services of the staff at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital.
Roy’s parents were Homer Bruce Engle and Lilly Lucille Slama, who predeceased him. He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), where he faithfully served in many various callings.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen, his prior ex-wife Lynette, and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Roy was predeceased by his son, Spencer Caleb Engle. Roy is also survived by his sisters Kathy, Judy, Lori, and his brother Ken, as well as multiple nieces and nephews. The children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild are as follows:

Roy obtained a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Weber State University and an associate degree from Salt Lake Community College. He worked as a computer programmer at Mountain America Credit Union, and then later as a software engineer for 16 years at the LDS Church Family History Department. He was part of the team that programmed both the Personal Ancestral File and the origination of the familysearch.org website database for the LDS Church.
Roy had excellent handyman skills and craftsmanship, whether building or fixing anything—be it cars, houses, or other projects. He loved genealogy, tools of all kinds, and spending time with family and friends. Roy was curious about how things worked and often shared his theories on Bible and Egyptian history and chronology. He even tried his hand at snow skiing a few times and survived to share the tales. In his younger years, he could tear apart and rebuild an engine from memory.
Known for his charitable nature, Roy provided service to anyone in need, habitually refusing payment for his services and even the parts he used. For Roy, family and his discipleship to Jesus
Christ were everything—priorities he consistently demonstrated through his devotion and dutiful acts of kindness.
Roy also loved to share jokes and hilarious experiences, especially reveling in his humorous “puns.” He could sense a good pun to share, regardless of the circumstances.
Roy’s initial funeral viewing will be Friday, June 7, 2024 at 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at the LDS Stake Center, located at 8485 S. 1000 E., Sandy, UT 84094.
