Gary Lee Ostler

d. October 31, 2018

1953 ~ 2018
Gary was born in Prairie City, Oregon, to Lucille Peay and Alma Boyd Ostler. His older brothers are Brian, Neal and Paul. The family moved to Midvale and three more younger brothers joined the family: Creed, Todd and Karl. Gary attended Hillcrest and was nicknamed Moses ... graduating in 1971. He served an LDS Mission to Germany where he was exposed to heavy air pollutants from the coal burned to produce power for the major industrial city of Dusseldorf where he'd been assigned and spent most of his time. He attended USU in Logan. For brief time he was married to Peggy Temple whom he met at the Whitmore Library where he had a full life's career and retired in 2014. Back in his early 20s Gary underwent surgery and therapies for a rare sinus cancer (likely brought on by the smoky atmosphere in Germany) ... causing him a lifetime of almost total deafness from the radiation treatments. Gary lived an active and healthy life but this Fall (2018) the vulnerable tissue became rapidly overwhelmed with infection and after 10 unconscious days in ICU he was taken home to his condo near Hillcrest where he'd lived most of his adult life and died in Hospice care on 24 Oct 2018. He lived an honorable and dignified life. Albeit quite isolated socially because of his deafness ... Uncle Gary was loved by his nieces and nephews for his sardonic sense of humor and playful nature. Preceded in death by both parents ... Gary had no children ... so his next-of-kin are all six of his surviving brothers. During the four years of his retirement Gary walked nearly every public street in Utah ... documenting every primary building and edifice and mapping virtually every mile of Utah's cities and towns with a key to indicate their locations and links to photographs he had taken ... the project kept him occupied and healthy up until the infection took his life. A link to a longer Bio-sketch will soon be uploaded to the Hillcrest Class of 71 Facebook site.
