Gene Hugh Covert, 69, passed away on September 4, 2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Avalon West Care Center. Gene was born July 19, 1950 to Leonard LeRoy and Mary Ennis Dial Covert in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Gene was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served as a custodial assistant, a home teacher and earned his Duty to God Award.
Throughout his life, Gene volunteered in several capacities. On October 4, 1989, he was honored at the Golden Key Awards presented by the Utah Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. Gene received the Outstanding Citizens Award from Governor Norm Bangerter.
In 1991, Gene shared his life story in a presentation to the Utah State Office of Rehabilitation. This took a lot of time and effort.
Gene received many certificates of appreciation for his volunteer service including: The Experience Corps Program in 2000, and from Wasatch Manor Management. He also worked for Western Rehabilitation Institute as a transport and wheelchair technician.
Gene's siblings included Linda Kay Covert Waters (deceased), his twin, Dean Leonard Covert, and Randy James Covert.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 19 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 1327 West 5550 South, Salt Lake City, Utah @ 11:00 a.m. The internment will follow at Valley View Memorial Park, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah.
