Rich was born July 23rd, 1938 in Manti, Utah to Layfe T. and Wilma (Harmon) Boyington. He had great fun growing up with his two brothers; Carl (Janice) Boyington and Chauncey (Cathy) Boyington. He graduated from Manti High School and attended one year at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah; and later Steven Henegar College and LDS Business School.
Rich joined the Utah Army National Guard in 1957. He attended basic training at Fort Ord, CA and advanced training at Fort Lewis, WA. He went on to serve for 42 years and retired at the rank of Command Sargeant Major.
Rich moved to Salt Lake City in 1958 and while working at Lagoon for the summer, he met Linda Ferguson. They would marry in 1959 and have two daughters; Lisa (Richard) Winter and Carla (Marti) Tobias-Boyington. After divorcing in 1969 he met the love of his life, Veone Wood Bowen. They were married May 27th, 1970. With this union he inherited four more children; Steven (Jill) Bowen, Stanley (Lacey) Bowen, Deana (Kenny) Rivera, and Donna (Terry) Mitamura. The family has since blossomed into 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, all of whom he absolutely adored.
Rich was an active father, grandfather and friend, spending time fishing, hunting, camping, skiing, waterskiing and golf. He especially enjoyed his time with family and friends at their property on Starvation Lake. When he was not out playing, he was enjoying his favorite past time – food! He loved to get together with family and share his specialty of making amazing breakfasts or being the BBQ master.
Rich began his career at Bradshaw Auto Parts as a Salesman and continued in the auto industry working at Streeter Chev as a Salesman; Volkswagen Intermountain as Parts Manager, and Freeway Ogden as their Service Director. In 1985, opened Downtown Radiator where he would remain a co-owner until 2008. During this time he also co-owned SBuddy’s Donut Shop. He also worked at the Glass Doctor and lastly, at Memorial Mortuary part time as a Funeral Director.
Rich was a member of the LDS Taylorsville 12th Ward for many years before moving to Cottonwood Creek Assisted Living, and joining the Cottonwood Creek Ward. Rich showed great leadership and was elected as President of Residential Council where he resided.
Rich was a genuine friend and was loved by many, as he always showed kindness, acceptance, and a reason to laugh.
Rich will be celebrated at a memorial service to be held October 25th, 2024 at the Cottonwood Creek LDS Ward House 1250 East 4800 South SLC, Utah 84117.
