Thomas (Ed) Riet

d. January 16, 2018

1937 ~ 2018

Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend graduated from this life, with honors, on January 9, 2018, after a diagnosis of congestive heart failure. Words are hollow and fall short in describing Ed's commanding presence throughout his life and in the lives of those who knew him. To know him is to love him, .....forever and ever, Amen.

Born June 21, 1937, in Rotterdam, Holland, Ed left a war-torn country, arriving in America at age 10. After proudly serving his new country in the United States Army, his ambitious nature and keen intelligence would drive his passion for work as a police officer, joining ranks with the Murray City Police Department. After 35 years of dedicated service to the Department and public, achieving the rank of Lieutenant, Ed "hung up his spurs", in 2003. To say that he loved the job, and the men and women who served alongside him is an understatement. Ed's brother Joel (now deceased) was already a police officer with Murray, and oh, how he loved Joel. Joel and Ed were inseparable and are now reunited. Ed was highly respected by the officers, especially in the detective division (1988 - 1994), where his men, on their own volition, presented him with a plaque expressing their appreciation for his "Effective leadership, dedicated service and how much they would "Miss" him. You guys know who you are and you'll never know how much he treasured your thoughtfulness; he felt honored to work with you, and, as you know, he enjoyed the dinner at his favorite spot, Restaurant Morelia's.

In retirement, Ed continued in his other passion, the art of wheeling and dealing with pawnshops throughout the valley and elsewhere. To all of you who became friends, he really enjoyed you and looked forward to seeing you each day, and we say thank you for the great "deals." Ed was always looking for a "good place to eat" (it's in a cop's DNA) and while he would try new places, he could never pass up meeting with old police buddies and friends at the usual spot, which will remain nameless for now. Not one to be exclusive, Ed had so many friends and acquaintances, but was especially fond of his breakfast buddies Fred, Gene, Rod, Pete and Stu. Wednesdays and politics will never be the same, but thanks for keeping Ed challenged, or, the other way 'round, no doubt it's both.

Ed's love for his family runs deep. Not saying much in words, but in thoughts and action. He leaves behind his loving wife, children, son Mark, daughter Julie and daughter Ashley (Chris). Also missing Grandpa are Ryanne, Tori (Salvador), Jake, Jared, Autumn and great grandchild, Lucy. Ed also loved his only surviving brother, Richard and wife (Nola) and all the many nieces and nephews who loved him back. Ed was truly loved by extended family members, as well. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, brothers John and Joel, and sister Joyce.

At Ed's request, no services will be held. However, a brief ceremony under the care of the Murray City Police Department will be held to honor his police service and dedicate his gravesite at Murray City Cemetery. The date and time for this ceremony will be announced in social media indicating a link to this website.
