1935 ~ 2017
Wayne Richard Singleton, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, Papa, and friend, returned to the loving arms of his Savior, parents, and siblings on December 30, 2017. Wayne was born to Lawrence Webster and Florence Ethel Nielsen Singleton on September 23, 1935 in Salt Lake City. He was the youngest of 6 children and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After serving four years in the United States Army, he returned from Korea and met who was, quote: "The Greatest thing that ever happened to me!" Wayne and Carlene Porter were married in 1957 and later sealed to their four children in the Salt Lake Temple. Wayne began working for the Mt. Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1958 and, in 1972, joined the Air National Guard. Because of his experience in communications and his role with the Guard, he had the awesome opportunity to travel all over the world. In 1990, Wayne was deployed to Saudi Arabia for the first Gulf War where he directed Crew Control in two separate locations. After 23 years of service in the Guard, he retired in 1995 as Chief Master Sergeant, Superintendent of Communications. Wayne held many church callings throughout his life including Bishopric counselor (Murray 15th Ward), Branch President (Washington 10th Branch), and High Counselor (Washington Stake and Washington East Stake). Wayne and Carlene were temple workers (Jordan River and St. George) for 16 years. What Wayne will be remembered most for is his love of family. He was devoted to his wife and children and adored his 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren (#21 coming in 2018!). Wayne would have given his life for anyone of them. "For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in." Wayne and Carlene exemplified the Savior's plea to love and care for His children. This was manifest in their willingness to open their home to many who needed a hot meal, a warm bed, or safe shelter-often for months at a time. Wayne and Carlene enjoyed taking their truck and trailer on camping trips and golfing with his life-long friends Marv Carlisle, Ron Harris, and Byron (Pete) Parker. Beginning in 2002, Wayne suffered through three major illnesses including an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (2002), heart surgery and stroke (2007), and lung cancer (2017). His family feels blessed to have had 15 extra years with him, and they are beyond grateful for his legacy. Wayne's grandson, Marcus Wayne, described him best: "Grandpa embodies all the values I believe a man should have. Stoicism, duty, love of country, family, faith, hard work, service to others, honesty and responsibility." Wayne is survived by his wife Carlene Porter Singleton, children Vickie Lynn (Jonathan) Hill, Jeffery Wayne (Jean) Singleton, Mark L (Eva) Singleton, Terri Ann (Scott) Gehrke, brother, Don K. (Karryn) Singleton, 15 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Until we meet again. Funeral services will be held Friday January 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sienna Hills LDS Chapel 1500 Ridge View Drive, Washington, Utah. Viewing will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the services.
